Participation Is Down In Top 10 High School Sports

Participation is down among the 10 most popular boys and girls high school sports compared to the last full pre-pandemic school year, except for two: boys golf and girls volleyball.  

The top 10 for boys and girls is the same as it was in 2018-19, the last time the National Federation of State High School Associations compiled its annual survey.  

Boys Sports:

1) Football (11 Player) 973.8K

2) Track & Field (Outdoor)  569.3K

3) Basketball  521.6K

4) Baseball  481K

5) Soccer  436.5K

6) Wrestling  231.9K

7) Cross Country 231.4K

8) Golf  148.6K

9) Tennis  145.9K

10) Swimming & Diving  123.2K

 

Girls Sports:

1) Track & Field (Outdoor)  456.7K

2) Volleyball  454.2K

3) Soccer  374.8K

4) Basketball  370.5K

5) Softball  340.9K

6) Cross Country  191.3K

7) Tennis  176.2K

8) Swimming & Diving  149.8K

9) Competitive Spirit  140.6K

10) Lacrosse  96.8K

Boys golf moved up one spot to No. 8, with nearly 4% more participants than it had three years ago while Girls volleyball stayed at No. 2, but had a 0.3% increase.

Overall high school sports participation declined 4% since 2018-19.
