Big 1st Quarter Lifts Elk Mound Over Neillsville/Granton

Saturday, October 24th, 2020 -- 8:01 AM

The Elk Mound Mounders scored all their points in the first quarter on their way to a 27-0 win over Neillsville/Granton in Cloverbelt Conference football on Friday night.

The Mounders took the opening kickoff down the field, keeping it on the ground the whole way, eventually scoring on an 11 yd run by Nate Lew to make it 7-0. After a Neillsville/Granton punt, Elk Mound drove down and scored again, this time on a 28 yd run by Avery Kaanta to make the score 13-0. After Neillsville/Granton was unable to move the ball again, Elk Mound got it back and on a 4th down play, Nate Lew scored on a 40 yd run to make it 21-0. The field at Elk Mound was very wet and sloppy and it proved costly for Neillsville/Granton as they fumbled deep in their territory and an Elk Mound player scooped it up and ran for a 23 yd touchdown and the Mounders led 27-0.

For the next 3 quarters neither team was able to score as the defenses played well and field conditions started play a big part.

Neillsville/Granton was unable to get anything going on offense. Jonah Zoschke led them in rushing with 10 carries for 31 yards. Quarterback Braden Trunkel was just 1 for 10 for 21 yards and an interception. The Warriors turned it over 3 times.

Elk Mound had two players over 100 yards rushing as both Kaanta and Lew rushed for 111 yards. Quarterback Ryan Bohl was 4 for 9 for 22 yards. Elk Mound had 1 turnover late in the game.

Elk Mound improves to 2-3 on the season while Neillsville/Granton fell to 1-4. The Warriors will host Mondovi next Friday.
