WIAA State Football Semi-Finals Feature Area Teams

Thursday, November 8th, 2018 -- 10:23 AM

Level 4, or the State Semi-Finals, of the WIAA football playoffs on Friday night will feature several area teams looking to punch their ticket to the Finals at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison next week...

DIVISION 5
Stratford (10-2) vs Spencer/Columbus Catholic (11-1), Friday 7 pm at Medford

These teams met up in a Week 1 non-conference contest that was controlled by Spencer/Columbus Catholic. The co-op team led 27-0 at halftime and cruised home for a 27-7 victory thanks to three forced turnovers. Stratford was limited to 80 rushing yards in the game, while Spencer/Columbus Catholic rolled up 202. Two of the state's top two-way linemen will meet up in this one, as Stratford junior Ben Barten (Wisconsin commit) faces off against Spencer/Columbus Catholic senior Logan Zschernitz (Northern Illinois commit).

DIVISION 7
Edgar (12-0) vs Reedsville (11-1), Friday 7 pm at Waupaca

Two outstanding defenses meet up in this one Reedsville has allowed more than 15 points just once this year, a 28-7 loss to Division 5 Cedar Grove-Belgium. On average, the Panthers give up just seven per contest. Unbeaten Edgar has been even better, allowing just 3.5 points per game with seven shutouts. Of course, the offenses have been pretty solid for both clubs as well. Edgar's special teams can dominate, including two punt return touchdowns in a span of 102 seconds last week vs. Loyal, from two different players.

DIVISION 2
Homestead (12-0) vs Marshfield (12-0), Friday 7 pm at Menasha

These teams met in the Division 1 state title game in 1999, as Homestead completed an unbeaten season with a 23-13 victory to give the Highlanders their first state title. A lot has changed since then, except Dave Keel on the Homestead sidelines. Last week, Marshfield got a last second field goal to get past Pulaski 32-29 despite giving up 387 rushing yards to the Red Raiders. Homestead can pound away with a deep stable of backs, and it could cause problems for the Tigers. Marshfield does have a versatile offense that put up more than 420 total yards of its own last week.
