Marshfield Post 54 Advances At State Legion Tournament

Wednesday, July 27th, 2016 -- 10:01 AM

The Marshfield Clinic Post 54 Blue Devils got a victory in its opening game at the Wisconsin Class AAA American Legion Baseball State Tournament.

According to MarshfieldAreaSports.com, thanks to the pitching of Jack Donahue and the ability to manufacture a run when it needed it, Marshfield did that, scratching out a 5-4 win over Sheboygan on Tuesday night at Jack Hackman Field.

Marshfield leadoff hitter Nate McDonald of Neillsville smacked a single to left field to lead off the ninth inning then stole second and moved to third as the throw was high and went into center field. After a strikeout, Trevor Schwecke hit a sacrifice fly to right to plate McDonald with what proved to be the winning run.

Donahue allowed just two hits in the next five innings, retiring 12 batters in a row at one point, seven via strike out. He finished with 13 strikeouts and just one walk.

Schwecke ended up with two hits and three RBIs, and Spencer's Hunter Luepke continued his hot hitting of late with a 3-for-5 night and two runs scored for the Blue Devils.

The Blue Devils (23-7) will take on Eau Claire (27-7) in a winners’ bracket game at 7 p.m. tonight in the double-elimination tournament.
