WIAA Varsity Basketball Games To Play 18 Minute Halves

Monday, November 16th, 2015 -- 8:18 AM

With the start of area girls basketball seasons this week, just a reminder that all varsity boys and girls basketball games will be played in two 18 minute halves instead of the four 8 minute quarters.

The WIAA Board of Control voted in June to change from the four 8 minute quarters to two 18 minute halves for varsity games. No additional time-outs are being added and each player is allowed to play in 2 halves per night.

All subvarsity games will be played in two 16 minute halves. Junior highs will continue to play in the quarter format - no halves for 8th grade on down.

At all high school level games, the mercy rule kicks in after 1/2 of the second half has been played. With a 40 point differential, the clock runs continuously with stoppage only for time-outs and end of game free throws.
