Opelt Takes Runner-up At Luther Open

Cornell College Junior, Phillip Opelt of Neillsville capped a strong opening week to the season with a runner-up finish at 133 pounds in the Elite Division at Saturday's Luther Open.Opelt, ranked No. 6 by D3wrestle.com, reeled off three victories before dropping a 7-3 decision in the finals to Wartburg's third-ranked Connor Campo. The Ram junior advanced to the championship match with a 5-3 decision over Northern Iowa's Shiquan Hall.
Opelt posted a 6-4 first-round win over North Central's Casey McWhirter, and then pinned Luther's Gareth Ballard (5:38) in the quarterfinals. Opelt raised his record to 4-1, which includes a fall in Cornell's season-opening win over Simpson Tuesday night.
The Rams wrestle at the University of Iowa Duals Friday in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
