WIAA State Volleyball Preview: Division 4

10 a.m. - Newman Catholic (38-1) vs. Living Word Lutheran (19-12)

LAST YEAR: Newman Catholic won its second straight Division 4 title with a 25-16, 25-12, 20-25, 25-19 sweep of Southwestern in the championship match.

ABOUT THE DIVISION 4 FIELD: Two-time defending champion Newman Catholic is making its eighth overall appearance and its seventh in the last eight seasons. The Fighting Cardinals' have had two runner-up finishes, those came in 2009 and 2012. They are the representatives out of the Bowler Sectional, defeating Suring in three sets in the final. They finished first in the South Division of the Marawood Conference this fall. Last year's runner-up Southwestern is back at the Resch Center for the third time in the last five seasons. In the Wildcats' first appearance in the State Tournament in 2011, they fell in the semifinals. After finishing in a tie for first with Cuba City in the Southwest Wisconsin Activities League standings, the Wildcats advanced through the Luther Sectional and eliminated Royall in four sets in the final. Clayton makes its third straight appearance and its seventh overall. The Bears have won two State titles, those coming in 1990 and 1996. In addition, they have finished runner-up twice, once in 2008 and the other in 2013. They return to the Resch Center this season with a three-set sweep over Washburn in the Shell Lake Sectional final. They are the co-champions with Turtle Lake in the Central Lakeland Conference this season. Living Word Lutheran celebrates qualifying for the State Tournament for the first time after the Timberwolves eliminated Catholic Central in four sets in the Beaver Dam Sectional final. They placed fifth in the standings of the Midwest Classic Conference this season.

CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES ON FS WISCONSIN: Watch the broadcast of the WIAA State Girls Volleyball finals matches Saturday on FS Wisconsin and the FS Wisconsin alternate channel. The Division 4 and the Division 3 title games will be aired live on FS Wisconsin alternative channel at 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., respectively. The Division 2 and Division 1 championships finals will be aired on the FS Wisconsin at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., respectively. Check local cable listings for the channel in your area.
