Opelt Picks Up Win In First Match

Thursday, November 13th, 2014 -- 11:06 AM

Sophomore Phillip Opelt of Neillsville, ranked No. 10 at 133 in Div. III, won his first match on Tuesday in Cornell College's season opening 22-15 win over Augustana.

Opelt put the Rams on the scoreboard with an 8-4 decision over Sean McMahon.

Cornell's wrestling team had six individual winners and got a meet-clinching pin from 197-pounder Jim Kirby (SO/Deerfield, Ill.) in Tuesday's victory.

"Overall as a team, it was not the kind of performance we are looking for," Cornell head coach Mike Duroe said. "Our technical skills were below average. Our conditioning was average. Our fight level was above average, and that turned out to be enough to win the dual." Now, we see where we are and build from here," Duroe said. "Our energy level is just not where we want it."

Coming up ? The Rams will send their entire team to the Luther Open Saturday in Decorah. The tournament is projected to field more than 450 wrestlers.
