Opelt Qualifies For NCAA Div. 3 Championships

Neillsville's own Phillip Opelt qualifies for NCAA Division 3 Championships at 133lb for Cornell College (Iowa).Opelt took 3rd at Regionals on Saturday. Opelt (22-12) advanced through the region's toughest weight class, which included the nation's top three 133-pounders. He pulled off a stirring 8-1 victory in the third-place match over Coe's second-ranked Jimmy Gotto, an NCAA runner-up at 125 a year ago.
Coach Mike Duroe said that Opelt's win was the upset of the day. He said, "It was a dominant performance over a very good wrestler."
The NCAA Division III Championships will take place March 14-15 at the new U.S. Cellular Center in downtown Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
