Altoona Tops Neillsville In 3rd Place Playoff

The Altoona Railroaders beat the Neillsville Warriors in the Cloverbelt Conference 3rd place crossover playoff in boys basketball on Saturday afternoon 60-56.

The Rails led 21-15 after one quarter led by Tristen Wibel with 8 points and David Hazuga with 7 points.

In the second quarter, Neillsville trailed by as many as 10 before coming back to trail by just 1 going into halftime. Matt Grottke led the Warriors with 10 points at the break.

In the 3rd quarter Neillsville outscored the Rails 15-13 to take a 45-44 lead heading into the final frame. Neal Matson had 6pts in the quarter to lead the Warriors.

In the fourth quarter of the back and forth game, Altoona was able to hit some late freethrows and outscore Neillsville 16-11 to make the final 60-56.

Grottke led all scorers with 17 points, Matson added 13 for the Warriors. Altoona had 3 players in double figures led by Wibel with 14, Max Bawden with 11 and Hazuga with 10.

Altoona is now 14-8 heading into tournament play on Tuesday while Neillsville falls to 15-7. Neillsville will host Viroqua on Tuesday night at the Fieldhouse, game time is 7pm, you can hear it live on 92.7 FM WPKG.
