Neillsville Cross Country Preview

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2012 -- 11:00 AM

The Neillsville boys and girls cross country teams are off and running for 2012.

On Tuesday they held a scrimmage involving 12 other teams at Levis Mound. Head Coach Adam Luchterhand said that a few teams surprised him in how well they did. The Altoona boys team was really strong and the Loyal/Greenwood/Granton team also looked solid. He said for the most part, Neillsville right where they he thought they would be early on.

Luchterhand said they have the most individuals out for cross country they've had in over 6 years with over 10 boys and over 10 girls out for the team. The team will be young especially on the girls side, while the boys have a couple of all-conference runners back from last year in Kordell Kapusta and Jared Boon. As far as the season goes, Adam says he looks for the boys to be up in the top 3 in the conference with a couple of all-conference performers while the young girls team will probably finish somewhere in the middle of the pack and he hopes maybe to sneak out a runner or two in the honorable mention or all-conference categories.

Luchterhand said the conference race for the boys looks like it could be a battle with Altoona, Loyal/Greenwood/Granton and Neillsville looking to race for the top spot along with Chippewa Falls McDonell and possibly Eau Claire Regis. For the girls, he said it looks like it's Abbotsford/Colby?s to lose. He doesn?t see any other team that can catch them for the top spot.

Neillsville will open the season next Tuesday at Loyal.
