Avoid Rear-End Crashes in Work Zones

Monday, July 30th, 2012 -- 9:00 AM

Road construction activity is reaching its peak across Wisconsin and rear-end crashes are the most common type of work zone collision.

According to the Wisconsin State Patrol, drivers who follow other vehicles too closely not only risk a traffic ticket, they risk getting into a potentially serious crash should traffic unexpectedly stop or slow. Under state law, it?s illegal to "follow another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent."

Last year in Wisconsin, there were nearly 6,000 convictions for following another vehicle too closely ? a violation that will cost a driver $200 and three demerit points.

A motorist?s best defense in any type of crash including a rear-ender is to wear a safety belt at all times to prevent being ejected or thrown around inside a vehicle.
