DNR Adds Clark County to Voluntary Access Program

Wednesday, April 18th, 2012 -- 10:23 AM

-Clark County was just added to the list of eligible counties to participate in the DNR's Voluntary Access Program.

The program, in short, pays landowners to open up their property to hunting, fishing, trapping, and sightseeing. The DNR acquired funds to lease properties for outdoor recreation opportunities.

The program does have benefits as it is cheaper for the DNR to "rent" than to buy property for public use and it provides financial incentive for landowners. It also keeps the tax base where it is.

The DNR encourages any landowner in a VAP county to apply. However, priority will be given to properties greater than 40 acres with at least 25% usable cover, and those located near existing public hunting or fishing grounds.
Lease Lengths last up to 3 years and you can receive $3/acre on agricultural land, $10/acre on grass/wetland, and $15/acre on forest land.
