Fire Danger Extreme in Wisconsin

Monday, April 9th, 2012 -- 8:32 AM

-The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the National Weather Service have put most of the state under a "red flag warning," meaning there is a high risk for forest fires.

According to the Associated Press, burn restrictions have been put in place for nearly all of Wisconsin. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports it's the first time in years that the warning has been issued for nearly all of the state.

The National Weather Service says the warning is in effect until 8 p.m. Sunday. All burn permits are suspended in affected areas. Racine County has issued a no burn order through Monday.

The DNR says a red flag warning is issued when wind, temperature and humidity combine to produce an extreme fire risk.

Officials are urging extreme caution in all outdoor activities.
The Department of Transportation also wants drivers to be alert of fires or smokes along and on state highways.

Over in Chippewa Falls, the fire department says burning permits will no longer be issued and most outside fires are prohibited starting Monday until conditions improve.
