No Sand Mining in County Forests

Thursday, March 29th, 2012 -- 10:48 AM

-It?s been decided, Clark County forests are off limits to sand mining.

At a recent mining committee meeting, it was decided that there will be no mining in the county forests and there will be no future talks of mining. The vote to end the talks was 4-0.

There were numerous reasons not to pursue sand mining. One was the stability of Clark County roads. A study was done to determine if the county roads could handle the stress of large equipment. The County Highway Commissioner, Randy Anderson, said that Highway H is the only highway that can.

Another reason is the environmental issues. There are many residents that don?t want that land to be touched. They feel the county forests are assets and should be left alone.

There were other reasons as well including the forests being too far away from a processing center and if there is even enough there to make it profitable.
