Maple Syrup Shortage in Wisconsin?

Tuesday, March 27th, 2012 -- 10:37 AM

-Is the state of Wisconsin going to face a Maple syrup shortage?

The short answer is no. However, many maple syrup producers did face a very tough year and it could affect prices from some distributors.

Peter Roth, the President of Roth Sugar Bush in Cadott said the reason behind that is because, ?it got to warm to fast. We need freezing nights with sunny, 20-25 degree days. We had one or two days of that, then it went to 70 degrees and stayed there for two weeks.?

Roth also said that a typical season lasts 4-6 weeks, but he has seen others years like this one where the season lasted roughly a day.

Roth also said that business has remained relatively close to the same as they both handle and produce maple syrup. He did mention that a lot of his guys are not hauling a lot of syrup as there isn?t much around.

Roth went on to say, ?There isn?t going to be a shortage of syrup. We had a big carry over from last year. The eastern part of Wisconsin and states out east had a very good year and Canada is still producing.?
