Granton Students Make Cheese

Thursday, March 15th, 2012 -- 9:53 AM

-Students in the agriculture education department at Granton High School had the opportunity to experience the art of cheese-making the past couple of weeks.

According to the Marshfield News Herald, members of the Feeding America class were able to learn the process of making cheese with the resource of a miniature cheese vat, as part of the CESA 10 agriculture instructor consortium.

This year, students made 11 different batches as they worked in pairs. The class recipes included bacon-ranch cheese, chili cheese, fajita cheese, spicy-buffalo cheese, dill cheese and garlic and salt and pepper cheese. They also tried to replicate farmer's cheese, jalapeno cheese, salami cheese and pizza cheese.

In addition to making their own cheese varieties, high school students are responsible for marketing their cheese product. They develop a magazine and radio advertisement for their cheese, to help them understand the role of marketing in dairy production. Besides cheese, students also made butter and ice cream.
