Hunters Voice Concerns to DNR

Wednesday, March 14th, 2012 -- 8:16 AM

-Hunters voiced their concerns about the deer population in Neillsville yesterday.

The DNR officials hosted a special meeting to talk about last season's hunt, and projected deer herd numbers for this year.

In the past, hunters and officials have clashed over how the herd is managed. And while some hunters argue there are still problems, DNR leaders said they are listening, and making changes.

But many hunters weren't afraid to speak out yesterday. One local resident said, "I think they could give out a less doe permits. I don't believe that they should be giving out the number of doe permits that they do."

A DNR official responded, "We're not actually expecting you to fill 100 percent of those tags so part of the reason we hand out so many tags is because we're expecting a lower success rate."

Leaders also discussed baiting and talked with private land owners about their concerns for this year's hunt.
