Burnstad's Market Coming to Spencer

Tuesday, March 13th, 2012 -- 8:34 AM

-Burnstad?s Market will be opening a new store in the former Spencer SuperValu.

According to the Marshfield News Herald, as soon as they got word that Spencer SuperValu was closing late last December, grocery store owners Derek and Kent Burnstad jumped in the car and made the trip from Tomah to inquire about purchasing the Spencer store.

Kent and his son, Derek, own Burnstad's Market, a Tomah-based grocery store chain founded in 1944. The Burnstads now own four supermarkets after acquiring the former Spencer SuperValu, for an undisclosed amount.
The SuperValu had one other suitor, Hansen's IGA, according to village of Spencer officials.

The closing of Spencer SuperValu, a fixture since the 1970s in the municipality of nearly 2,000, left the village without a grocery store. Store officials expect the Burnstad's Market in Spencer to open by the end of April and employ about 25 to 30 people. Spencer SuperValu had employed 33.

Derek Burnstad said he and his father hired a "very successful store director" in Andy Cveykus, who previously directed the Festival Foods in Marshfield for 11 years.

Cveykus said the move was nothing against Festival Foods, but he wanted to work for a smaller store in a smaller community and have more opportunities to interact with customers.
