Officials: 2011 Gun-Deer Season Among Safest Ever

Monday, November 28th, 2011 -- 2:16 PM

This hunting season will go down as one of the safest on record.

For the second straight year, there were no hunting-related shooting fatalities reported during the nine-day season that wrapped up on Sunday.

There were six hunters shot, including one in northern Clark County. That 17-year-old female was airlifted to St. Joseph?s Hospital in Marshfield on Sunday, November 20, but was discharged from the hospital on Thursday.

Two of the six hunters suffered self-inflicted wounds.

The safest year on record was 2004 when there were only four shooting accidents, but two of those were fatal.

The agency reports it sold 620,534 gun deer licenses this year, down slightly from 621,094 last year.
