While license sales were down, those that did get out in the woods for the start of the nine-day gun-deer season had more success than last year.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources data shows 6,000 more deer were killed this opening weekend than last.

Hunters were also more successful here in Clark County.

Wildlife officials say 112,581 deer were taken on Saturday and Sunday; that's up 5.6% from 106,404 deer harvested over opening weekend last year. This despite license sales dropping from nearly 608,000 last year to 603,919 this year.

Hunters bought 607,926 licenses prior to opening day last year.

In Clark County, hunters bagged 3,305 deer, up 4 percent from 3,166 during last year?s opening weekend.
