Clark Co. A Destination For Hunters

Friday, November 18th, 2011 -- 12:24 PM

There was plenty of anticipation in the area Friday, the day before the opening of the gun-deer season.

"For a lot people, this is the biggest day of the year," says DNR Warden Adam Hanna.

Hanna was visiting with families getting their camps ready. "It's a tradition that goes back so far in those families. It's grandpa, dad and their kids. What a fun atmosphere," he says.

Clark County always has the biggest, or one of the biggest, deer harvests in the state.

Hanna is the only warden permanently stationed in Clark County, but this time of year there are six to eight wardens that come in to help. It's a challenge to find them a place to stay.

"I spoke with the owners of Fannie's (Supper Club and Motel) a couple days ago, they said they had reservations for five years ahead," he notes, "that says something about the tradition of deer hunting in Clark County."

Are there deer out there? Hanna says there are plenty, but you?ve got to move around a bit to find them. "Hunters have to remember to get out and kick the brush a little bit," Hanna suggests.

Last year, Clark County hunters bagged 6,676 deer during the gun-deer hunt (4th most in the state).

The buck harvest in the county was up nearly 14%, but the doe harvest dropped 6.15%. Overall, hunters took almost 2% more whitetails in 2010 year compared to 2009.

NO MORE 'EARN-A-BUCK'

For the third straight year, the Department of Natural Resources' earn-a-buck requirement will apply only to chronic wasting disease zones. What's more, the state Legislature passed a measure this year outlawing the program outside the CWD zones starting next year.
