LOCAL AUTHOR TACKLES "MYSTERY LIGHTS"

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011 -- 1:38 PM

A Lindsey woman hopes her new book will encourage others who have seen things they just couldn?t explain to come forward.

Betty May Ockerl began seeing strange lights around her home south of Lindsey back in 2004.

She documented more than one dozen strange encounters between 2004 and 2007 for her recently published book, ?The Mysterious Lindsey Lights."

"The lights were different colors, but they all acted the same way," she remembers. "They would turn on, one at a time. There was no noise. They would hover there. They would just shut off, one at a time, in the opposite direction and they'd be gone."

"It was just very, very odd."

Now, when people start seeing strange lights, they might start questioning their own sanity, but Ockerl wasn?t alone: Her daughter Amanda saw them, too. Her husband Gene was a skeptic until he started to see them.

"When it happens to you, you know that what you're seeing is very strange. People can't explain simply describe it to people that haven't seen these things. Once you've seen them, you know what people are talking about," Ockerl says.

What were they? Ockerl still isn?t sure. But she knows what they were not: they weren?t earthly aircraft and they weren?t military jets or flares. For now, she?s resigned to calling them ?unidentified.?

In the few weeks the 85-page paperback has been available, Ockerl says a handful of people have already come forward to disclose their similar stories.

"I knew we couldn't be the only ones, but how do you find people? You don't just go out there and start bringing this topic up. People will think you're a little crazy," she says, "but, after you put it in a book and people can read it, then they do come forward. It has been happening in this area."

And, now that others have come forward, Ockerl is considering documenting their stories in a follow-up book.
