ABC News Calls Pennsylvania for Joe Biden: Biden Apparent Winner of 2020 Election

(ABC News) -ABC News is characterizing Former Vice President Joe Biden as the apparent winner of Pennsylvania and the president-elect, beating incumbent President Donald Trump.

California Sen. Kamala Harris is also slated to become the first woman and first person of color to serve as vice president.

While the candidates waited for results in the days following the election, Trump sowed doubt in its integrity, firing off baseless claims of voter fraud as his campaign filed a barrage of lawsuits to stop vote counts in several key states.

He falsely claimed victory in the early hours of Wednesday when he had a viable pathway to the White House, but it became clear, as mail-in and absentee votes continued to be counted, that Biden would take the Electoral College and also win more popular votes than any presidential candidate in history with 72 million and counting.

Painting the election as a "battle for the soul of the nation," Biden won on a message of unity over division, compassion over anger, and reality over what he called Trump's "wishful thinking" as the coronavirus pandemic cast a heavy shadow over the campaign.

The 2020 election has shattered voting records, surpassing the 138 million who went to the polls in 2016.
