Wisconsin farmers are producing more milk, but getting less for it.According to new data from the USDA, Wisconsin milk production has increased each and every year since 2006, but the relative value of that milk has dropped consistently at the same time.
The report shows that in 2006, Wisconsin farmers produced 23.1 billion pounds of milk. That number went up annually to reach 25.7 billion in 2010. But gross producer income fell from $4.5 billion in 2007 to $3.3 billion in 2009.
Meanwhile, average yearly price per hundredweight of milk fluctuated during the five-year span at $13.30, $19.30, $18.90, $13.10 and $16.10, respectively.
Cash receipts on all of Wisconsin's dairy farms were higher last year compared to 2006 at $4.1 billion.
