MEMORIAL MED GETS $50,000 GRANT

Friday, April 29th, 2011 -- 12:05 PM

Memorial Medical Center in Neillsville got a big financial shot in the arm Thursday.

U.S. Congressman Ron Kind (D-La Crosse) presented MMC CEO Scott Polenz with a $50,000 grant and a $500,000 loan from the USDA - Rural Development Community Facility program for the health care provider to implement an electronic health records system.

"By getting these electronic health records in place, not only do I think it's going to increase the efficiency of care and reduce medical error, it's also going to give us the data we need to fine out what works and what doesn't work," Kind noted.

Kind has long advocated shifting the country?s health care system from one that rewards volume of care, to one that rewards the effectiveness of care. He says electronic medical records will help.

"They're going to be able to make logical decisions," he explained. "Through comparative effectiveness research, we'll learn what is effective, and what isn't effective, in medical treatment," Kind said.

The project will cost an estimated $1.2-million.
