BUDGET REPAIR BILL ON HOLD

Saturday, April 2nd, 2011 -- 7:21 AM

Friday was not a good day for Republican legislators who may have hoped the worst was behind them in regard to the controversial budget repair bill.
The Attorney General?s Office, who is representing the legislative conference committee that divided the controversial bill before senate passage, offered little defense to claims the committee broke the state's open meetings laws when they held a March 9th.
Area Rep. Scott Suder, (R-Abbotsford), is the Assembly Majority Leader and a member of the conference committee. He and other Republicans are listed as witnesses, but have invoked legislative immunity at the hearing.
Dane County Circuit Judge Maryann Sumi didn?t lift a temporary restraining order barring the state from publishing the law and said she expects the law will be thrown out because the critical meeting was not noticed properly and the public was severely restricted from entering the Capitol.
The legislature could just reconvene and pass the law after giving proper notice. Their refusal to do so has many observers speculating they no longer have the votes to do so.
