BUDGET REPAIR BILL CONFUSION IMPACTS LOCALS

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011 -- 11:29 AM

The confusion over the status of the budget repair bill is impacting local municipalities.

The City of Neillsville has been advised to not start taking more money from workers? checks for retirement and health insurance until it?s clear the bill?s passage and publication was handled properly.

The bill would force public workers to pay 5.8% of their salary toward retirement and 12.6% of their health care premium. Neillsville workers currently don?t pay a retirement contribution and pay 10% of their health care premium cost.

Clark County has also been advised to hold off on taking more off the top of their employees? checks. Most of Clark County?s unionized workers are under contract until the end of next year. The law likely won?t impact them until their contract expires. Non-union workers will have to start paying into the retirement system when the law takes affect.

It is possible workers will have to make a retroactive payments to cover the increased pension and health insurance contributions.
