TIME TO THINK ABOUT FLOOD INSURANCE

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011 -- 11:09 AM

Sure, things are frosty out there now, but spring will get here eventually. And if our recent history is any indication, it might bring some flooding with it.

Clark County Emergency Management Director Michelle Hartness says folks should think about buying flood insurance now? before it?s too late.

You may think your homeowner?s plan will cover flood damage?

"Most standard homeowners' insurance does not cover flood damage," Hartness says. "People need to be protected from floods because a large amount of damage does incur to homes' personal property during flooding."

People should visit www.floodsmart.gov, or call their local insurance provider for more information.

Floodplains change over time.

"As a matter of fact, we have a new floodplain map in Clark County, and people should check it," she explains. "(But), 20- to 25% of all claims occur in moderate to low risk areas, so people may want to check into (insurance) even if they're not in a high risk area."

The National Weather Service will release their first flood prediction on Thursday.

Hartness says a healthy amount of snowfall combined with ditches that still have storm debris from last summer could add up to some problems this spring.
