XCEL ENERGY: 44,000 CUSTOMERS WITHOUT POWER

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010 -- 11:48 AM

(Press Release) Xcel Energy crews are still busy restoring power to thousands of customers left in the dark from high wind conditions.

Approximately 44,000 Xcel Energy customers, from Ironwood, Mich., south to Viroqua and from Hudson east to Abbotsford, were without power due to damaging winds, which began Tuesday and are expected to continue through today.

As of 11 a.m., approximately 14,500 Xcel Energy customers remain without electricity. The hardest hit areas include Ironwood and Marenisco, Mich., as well as Presque Isle, Mercer Ashland, Bayfield and Hayward in northern Wisconsin. Every available resource has been deployed to these areas.

The majority of power outages in the Eau Claire, La Crosse and Hudson areas have been restored; however crews are still working on a number of scattered outages. Over the course of the first day of the storm, approximately 3,300 customers in the La Crosse, Onalaska, Sparta, Viroqua, West Salem, Galesville and Blair areas were affected by power outages. Another 8,300 customers in and around Eau Claire, Chippewa Falls, Abbotsford, Neillsville, Menomonie and Prescott lost power for a period of time during the storm.

Xcel Energy expects additional outages, and crews are prepared to restore power safely and as quickly as possible.
