BRADY CENTER RESPONDS TO CONCEALED CARRY RULING

Thursday, October 14th, 2010 -- 12:22 PM

STATEMENT OF BRADY PRESIDENT PAUL HELMKE ON WISCONSIN CONCEALED CARRY RULING

Washington, D.C. ? Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, issued the following statement today in response to a Wisconsin trial court judge?s ruling concerning the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution:

"The ruling by a Wisconsin trial court judge that the U.S. Constitution provides a right to carry concealed weapons in public endangers our communities, puts law enforcement at risk, and is just plain wrong. While the U.S. Supreme Court has decided that the Second Amendment guarantees a narrow right to possess a handgun in the home for self-defense, it has also indicated that laws prohibiting concealed carry have been upheld as constitutional for more than a century. This ruling shows the danger of accepting the gun lobby's vision of the Second Amendment as mandating its any guns, any where, for anybody agenda. The decision should be reversed on appeal."
