STATE WON'T APPEAL PREMISE REGISTRATION RULING

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010 -- 9:27 AM

It appears a local judge?s ruling on a controversial state law will stand.

According to Clark County District Attorney Darwin Zwieg, Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection officials recently decided not to pursue an appeal of Judge Jon Counsell?s decision that the state's mandatory premise registration law infringed on a local Amish farmer?s religious beliefs.

The law, which requires all Wisconsin property owners to register their land if livestock are kept there, was seen by many in the Amish faith as a precursor to the Mark of the Beast.

After Counsell?s initial ruling in March, the state filed a motion to reconsider. Judge Counsell would not hold a hearing on the motion, in essence killing it.

Zwieg says state officials decided not to pursue their appeal.
