STATE HELPS MARSHFIELD LAB EXPAND

Thursday, August 12th, 2010 -- 9:05 AM

A DNA-testing facility in Marshfield is expanding and doubling its workforce, thanks in part to a state tax credit.

Commerce Secretary Aaron Olver made the announcement during a Wednesday
afternoon news conference.

Prevention Genetics--a company founded six years ago by former Marshfield
Clinic physician Doctor James Weber--is getting $321-million dollars in state tax credits to help with the addition of 12-thousand square-feet, and 51 new jobs.

"We're building a new office building, which will be attached to our laboratory building," Weber said. "Basically, we need the building to keep growing."

"We'll ground break in mid-September, and the building should be finished by next April. We're going quite rapidly," he added.

The tax credits were good news for Marshfield Chamber of Commerce Director Scott Larson, in a community hit hard by the loss of hundreds of manufacturing and other jobs during the recession.

"It's fantastic news, for all the obvious reasons. They're not just adding any kind of jobs, these are advanced-degree positions," Larson stated. "They're very well paying jobs. That's something special."

This is the second time in its brief history that Prevention Genetics is getting state help. The company received start-up funds in the form of a state loan, which Doctor Weber paid off with a check presentation to Secretary Olver at the start of ednesday's announcement.

Prevention Genetics does testing of clinical specimens from all over the world.
