COMMITTEE PREPARES TO SELL LOYAL REFERENDUM

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010 -- 11:38 AM

While rumors of the school?s demise are overblown, school officials in Loyal say it?s hard to overstate the importance of getting a proposed revenue cap exemption passed this fall.

The school board is going to voters in November seeking the ability to collect money above the state-imposed revenue cap for the next several years. The exact figure hasn?t been set, but it?s looking like about $700,000 per year.

A committee hoping to promote the referendum is meeting for the first time tonight. The meeting will be at 6 p.m. in the High School library and is open to the public.

Superintendent Graeme Williams says the group plans to develop a list of cuts that will be made should the referendum go down in defeat. Those cuts will include program offerings and staff positions, but Williams says their professional staff has already been trimmed significantly in recent years.

The district faces a projected $600,000 deficit for the coming school year.

Last April, voters turned back a three-year, $500,000 per year revenue cap exemption.
