SCOUTS CELEBRATE 100 YEARS

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010 -- 12:14 PM

The Boy Scouts of America are celebrating the organization?s 100th anniversary this year.

Local Cub Master Tim McQuade says Neillsville Pack 43 is no different.

There are 29 local Cub Scouts and eight Boy Scouts.

"A couple people started this four years ago with, basically, one scout. So, it's been growing nicely," McQuade says. "This year was our largest increase that we've ever had: we increased 14 kids this year."

The concepts that have driven scouting since its inception in 1910 obviously aren?t new, but are needed today more than ever. Lifelong learning, mentoring, serving others and healthy living are among the cornerstones of the program.

McQuade says Neillsville?s pack has been very active in the past year.

"There are a lot of things that stick out in my mind," McQuade recalls, "this summertime, we did outdoor camping. We do field trips. Our Pinewood Derby is one of the big events, we also have a chili cook-off at that time."

Now, the scouts are looking forward to their Blue-Gold Banquet. "We're actually having the Chippewa Valley Council, which we belong to, come down and do the service this year, because of the 100th anniversary."

Pack 43 is divided into 5 different dens that meet about twice per month. They also have a monthly activity. The entire Pack meets once per month.

"Den meetings are designed to help them progress and learn. The Pack meeting is designed to award the scouts for their achievements," McQuade explains.
