IT'S A GREAT TIME TO GIVE BLOOD

Monday, January 25th, 2010 -- 11:25 AM

January is National Blood Donor Month.

"This is a month that it's very difficult to meet our demand for blood," explains Vicki Bohman of the BloodCenter. "That's due to weather conditions, people are busy coming off the holidays and sickness is a big issue."

All blood types are needed this time of year. Each donation can help save three lives.

"We take one pint (you have 10-12 pints in your body), we can turn that into three different blood products: red cells, platelets and plasma," she explains. "It only takes between 45 minutes and an hour to give blood, but in that time, you're able to save up to three lives."

Anyone who is at least 16-years-old with parental consent, weighs a minimum of 110 lbs. and is in generally good health can donate blood. The entire process takes about an hour and all blood types are needed. Donors should bring a photo ID.

The BloodCenter is teaming up with the Neillsville United Methodist Church and
Saint Mary?s Catholic Church for a blood drive Tuesday, January 26th from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Neillsville American Legion.
