DEER HARVEST DOWN STATEWIDE, LOCALLY

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009 -- 12:23 PM

The state's deer harvest during the opening weekend was way down. And it was down locally, too.

Statewide, more than 30,000 fewer deer were taken during the opening weekend this year than last.

This year, hunters registered a preliminary tally of 100,330 deer over the first two days of the hunt compared to 133,828 last year; that?s a drop of 25%.

Here in Clark County, hunters bagged 32% fewer deer. The preliminary figures indicate 3,183 deer were harvested. The buck harvest was down 22%, while the doe harvest was down 38%.

Clark County?s harvest, while well below last year?s, still ranked 2nd in the state behind Waupaca County, where hunters bagged 3,399 deer.

Wildlife officials predicted the lower harvest numbers due to lower deer numbers in many areas of the state, fewer herd control units and no earn-a-buck units outside of the chronic wasting disease management zone.
