GRANTON MAN MUST PAY FUEL SPILL CLEAN-UP

Some excavation work gone awry is proving costly for a Granton man.According to a Department of Justice press release, Clark County Circuit Court Judge Jon Counsell entered a default judgment against Daniel Wolf Monday, finding him liable for violating Wisconsin's hazardous substances spills law.
Wolf was hired to do some excavating work at a rural Town of Grant property. While at the property, he took it upon himself to dig up and remove a gasoline tank, a kerosene tank, and a diesel tank. The first two tanks were empty, but the diesel tank contained approximately 3,000 gallons of a diesel-water mixture. Wolf proceeded to roll the diesel tank across the ground until it was empty.
He did not report the spill to the DNR, and he did not take steps to contain the spill, even after asked to do so by the DNR. The DNR contracted with private environmental firms to stabilize and clean up the spill. The clean-up cost Wisconsin taxpayers $40,688.22.
Mr. Wolf did not respond to the State's Complaint, so the Court entered a default judgment against him. He was fined, and will have to pay back the clean-up costs.
