AREA COUNTY SLASHING JOBS

Thursday, November 12th, 2009 -- 11:09 AM

While the budget Clark County supervisors approved Tuesday night keeps staffing levels nearly the same, one nearby county is making significant cuts.

Trempealeau County had to patch a $900,000 deficit.

This week, board members there elected to cut the switchboard operator, county planner and people in the extension and clerk of courts office. The sheriff and highway departments were directed to slash $250,000 from their budgets.

All tolled, county board members cut the equivalent of seven full and part time jobs. The budget passed on an 11 to 5 vote.

In 2010, Clark County will have 399 full time and 199 part time employees. While that?s not a big deviation from the current year, it?s significantly less than back in 2001, when the county employed 222 part time and 449 full time employees. That?s a decrease of about 11%.
