MEIER LAWYERS WANT OUTSIDE JURY

Monday, July 27th, 2009 -- 2:37 PM

It appears the next step in a Neillsville bar room murder case will be a motions hearing.

And it could be a long one.

Tyler Meier is charged with Felony Murder ? Battery. Prosecutors allege he punched 43-year-old Keith Young at the Brickyard Bar and Grill on February 1st. Young fell, apparently hitting his head. He was hospitalized in critical condition from shortly after the assault, to the time of his death on February 3.

The defense has filed several motions, including a motion seeking a jury from outside of Clark County to hear the case, and a motion to suppress all statements Meier made to law enforcement officers after the incident.

In the change of venue motion, the defense claims local media have covered the event with ?an intensity nearly impossible to ignore.?

They also note the victim was a longtime resident of a close-knit community.

The defense wants Meier?s statements to officers in the aftermath of the incident thrown out because he was intoxicated at the time and/or was not read his Miranda Rights.

No future court date has been scheduled.

Court records show Meier recently moved from Shawano to Eleva.
