GROSS MAKES THE CUT

Monday, May 18th, 2009 -- 12:22 PM

Another local car dealer got good news last week.

Gross Automotive Group, based in Neillsville with locations in Marshfield and Black River Falls, is not among the 1,100 GM dealers that may be forced to close.

They did not receive the dreaded certified letter Friday, and ?no news is good news,? according to Wayne Gross.

"Fritz Henderson, the new CEO of General Motors, two weeks ago, announced they were going to cut 42% of the dealerships," Gross said, "that's all he said, so, everybody was sitting around wondering who they were going to cut."

Unlike Chrysler the day before, GM didn?t release a list of dealerships they plan to close, so Gross didn?t know if his other friends in the industry were as lucky.

He does know this has been a frustrating turn-of-events.

"The problem is...the government is indicating to Chrysler and General motors that they want (them) to cut dealers. Some of it is, they indicate, they want larger, stronger dealerships," Gross says, "so, what they're saying is they are biased against small business."

"I didn't think our country operated that way. It's supposed to be the free-enterprise system."

Gross has been selling GM vehicles since the mid 1950s.
