CAST YOUR CARES AWAY

Today is the calm before the storm on Wisconsin lakes and rivers.

Tomorrow is the tradition fishing opener around the state. The numbers say it all: about 1.4 million licensed anglers annually help contribute $2.75 billion of economic activity, pursuing 165 fish species on 15,081 lakes and 42,000 miles of year-round fishing streams.

The most recent angler survey in 2006 determined Wisconsin anglers catch about 88 million fish, keeping 33 million. Gov. Jim Doyle and Department of Natural Resources secretary Matt Frank will kick it off at the 44th Annual Wisconsin Governors Fishing Opener, held this year on the Chippewa Flowage in Hayward.

DNR officials reported Wednesday that license sales are up notably from last year.
