BACK IN THE SADDLE

Friday, April 24th, 2009 -- 3:00 PM

Wayne Hoffman and his son, Wayne Jr., are at the outset of a big adventure.

The St. Point duo are riding horseback across the country to raise awareness and funds for two non-profits: Feed The Children and The American Cancer Society.

The 6,600 mile journey will take them all over.

"From here we're going to go over to Plum City, then we'll cross over to Minnesota. From there, we'll take HWY 212 through South Dakota, Montana all the way to Wala Wala, Washington," Hoffman says.

Then they'll travel south through the west coast states, before turning east again.

The trip began earlier this week. Unfortunately, the weather hasn't been cooperating. They've camped in the horse barn at the Clark County Fairgrounds the past few nights.

They hope to push off after the rain clears this weekend.

On a good day, they can travel between 30 and 40 miles. But, they don?t want to go too fast.

"I've been a truck driver for 18 years, so I've been down all these roads. But you don't get to see things when you're traveling 65-70 mph. I want to stop and smell the roses," Hoffman says.

Plus, Hoffman says their horses Calipso and Sledgehammer get great gas mileage.

As they travel, they?re meeting up with other horse lovers and people that are just interested in their trip. They are willing to buy hay and grain as needed, but have so far been blessed by some nice donations.
