UNEMPLOYMENT UP IN MARCH

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009 -- 12:14 PM

Unemployment rates are going up in just about every corner of Wisconsin, including Clark County.

Statistics released by the Department of Workforce Development on Wednesday show joblessness went up in March in all 12 metropolitan areas and 64 out of 72 counties.

Statewide, the unemployment rate rose to 9.4% in March from 8.8% the month before. That's the highest rate in 26 years and amounts to about 290,000 people without jobs.

Clark County continues to be ranked in the top third of state counties.

The March unemployment rate here climbed from 10.8% in February to 11.5%. That?s the 22nd highest rate in the state.

The March rate is almost twice as high as it was last year.

The highest rates in the state were recorded in Rusk and neighboring Taylor Counties, at 16.6 percent and 14.3 percent respectively.
