BABY, IT'S DRY OUT THERE

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009 -- 1:14 PM

First the good news for farmers: it?s very dry out there; now the bad news: it?s very dry out there.

"If guys have not started, they're going to get started this week or next week for sure," UW-Extension Crops and Soils agent Richard Halopka relates, "I've seen one or two corn planters in the field, also."

It's extremely early to plant corn. "I think about two or three years ago, I think the earliest I could remember is April 16th, and that was only 10 acres as an experiment. This is very early," he says.

While Halopka says it makes farmers feel good to get out and "tear up some ground," everyone will be praying for rain soon.

"All we can do is hope that Mother Nature comes along and blesses us with some moisture, but not too much moisture."
