LOCAL DAIRIES GET GRANTS

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009 -- 11:24 AM

A couple area dairies are getting a share of the $100,000 in grants announced Monday by Governor Jim Doyle.

The Value Added Dairy Initiative dairy processor grants will help develop green packaging and goat dairying efforts, among other innovations.

Holland?s Family Cheese in Thorp will get $12,5000 to help develop a computer-based cheese tracking system all the way through aging and distribution to markets. This will help improve the farmstead operation?s profitability.

And LaGranders Hillside Dairy in Stanley will get $20,000 to help perform an expansion that includes engineering and software programming to enter a new market. New product lines will increase the plant?s need for milk and diversify its high-quality products.

'Wisconsin's' dairy industry generates $20 billion each year, accounting for many jobs and a large portion of the state's export market.
