BURN CAREFULLY (IF YOU MUST)

Thursday, April 9th, 2009 -- 12:15 PM

We are at the brink of another Wisconsin wildfire season. We?ve had several grassfires break out in the past week; one, in Dunn County, burned 600 acres.

"Traditional wildfire season occurs as we speak. Typically, March, April and May is our peak fire season," says Catherine Regan, a wildfire prevention specialist with the Department of Natural Resources.

"This time of year we see low relative humidities, higher winds, drier vegetation on the ground," she notes.

The DNR monitors moisture levels to predict how bad a fire season will be, but the ever-changing weather can put plenty of wrinkles in their forecasts.

"The number one thing we want to do is encourage people to avoid burning. Choose options like composting or recycling."

The DNR recently implemented a new burning permit system. You now only need one permit per year, but you must call an ?800? number or check a website to make sure you?re allowed to burn.
