GROUP ORGANIZES OVER EAU PLEINE FISH KILL

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009 -- 11:38 AM

From the Wisconsin Radio Network

A fish kill on the Big Eau Pleine Reservoir has prompted a citizen's group to take action.

The Big Eau Pleine Citizen's Organization is pushing for changes in the way water levels are managed at the reservoir. BEPCO's Mike Paul says the changes are necessary to help mitigate an ongoing fish kill. The DNR says 70 to 80-percent of the fish population was killed in the reservoir over the winter months.

Pollution from manure run-off has caused the amount of dissolved oxygen to drop to dangerously low levels. Paul says changes aren't likely to stop future fish kills completely, but he says they could help to reduce the impact on the population.

BEPCO also wants the company that manages the reservoir to continue operating an aerator that helps put more oxygen into the water.

Paul says something has to happen before the fish kills get worse.
