TELEMEDICINE AVAILABLE IN NEILLSVILLE

Thursday, February 12th, 2009 -- 2:01 PM

Now you can see medical specialists in La Crosse without leaving Neillsville.

Memorial Medical Center is now offering ?telemedicine.?

The service uses specialized cameras and medical equipment to link patients with specialists at Gundersen Lutheran.

Dr. Tim Meyer, who is overseeing the new feature, says patients can now receive Fertility, Reproductive and Dermatology services.

"The equipment is state-of-the-art," Meyer says, "You're able to listen to heart sounds, lung sounds, look at an ear, look at a throat, look at a skin lesion, all through the technologies of audio/visual advancements."

So, basically, you?ll be sitting in a room, you?ll see your doctor through a high-definition video feed, a medical assistant will assist the doctor by operating check-up equipment, which the doctor will monitor in real time.

Meyer says the service has been up and running since the beginning of the year, and the patients have been impressed.

"It's a convenience issue for our patients. They don't have to leave the facility. Most people come to Memorial because its a hometown hospital; it has a hometown feel. A lot of times, to get some specialty services, people have to leave to go to a larger medical center," Meyer explains.

While they?re starting with dermatology and reproductive health, Meyer says the possible uses are ?endless,? and cites neurology, hematology, oncology, and behavioral medicine as likely additions.
