MARSHFIELD MAINSTREET PREPARES FOR CONSTRUCTION

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009 -- 9:47 AM

Marshfield businesses are looking toward an upcoming Main Street reconstruction with mixed feelings.

"The downtown needs to be redone, we all know that," says Denise Sonnemann, Executive Director for Mainstreet Marshfield, "But, with the economy the way it is, there's worry that a lot of their businesses won't survive."

The South Central reconstruction project is scheduled to begin in April and run through October. The street will be closed from 6th Street to Veterans Parkway.

"Everything will be redone from the sidewalks to the streets. There will be trees planted, new flowerpots, new benches, new light poles," she says, "Basically, an entire face lift for the Downtown."

Businesses will stay open, but they?ll use their backdoor entries.

For some, that will mean remodeling will be necessary. Sonneman says funds are available for those projects.

"We have two funding sources. One is a reinvestment loan, the other is a $500 grant, there are specific requirements," Sonnemann explains, "Of course, people aren't using the backdoor entrances. A lot of the entrances led to a storage room or a break room. They had to do remodeling to prepare for the downtown reconstruction."
